Pediatric Services
At Norfolk Speech and Language Services, we believe that parents know their child best and are usually the first to note that their child's skills or behavior may not be developing as expected. Parents often become aware that their child’s speech and language skills are not “on track” by comparing them to other children their child's age or to an older sibling when he or she was that age. Other times, parents simply have concerns about their child’s communication development skills … especially when the child's inability to understand or use speech and language results in frustration or other challenging behaviors. Researching and investigating speech and language services for your child may be your first step in trying to determine if various aspects of development are on track, and NSLS offers different service options for assessing communication development in children.
Addressing the speech, language and learning needs of children at an early stage is critical to their long-term success. Delaying intervention may lead to a range of negative implications including social isolation, poor self-esteem & academic performance and failure to realize their full potential. However, by building on strengths and targeting weaknesses as early as possible, most children will become successful learners and develop better relationships with adults and peers.
Treatment
Our therapists have extensive training and experience working with children of all ages, and our programs are customized to each child's individual needs. Therapists work to include specific recommendations and activities after each treatment session for parents and caregivers so that they can be fully involved in their child's progress. We work to empower families by educating them about the development of speech, language, social-emotional and other crucial developmental skills in a fun & natural setting. At Norfolk Speech, we know that each child responds differently to the various methods of treatment, which is why each child is treated as an individual with a program developed to meet his or her needs.
